Custom Metal Enclosures: Design, Fabrication, and Finishing
Custom metal enclosures protect electronics, sensors, and controls from impact, dust, and weather—and they are often the most visible part of your product. Getting the design, material, and finish right up front avoids rework and field failures. This guide walks through materials, build methods, sealing, and the finishing that makes an enclosure look and perform like a finished product.

Enclosure Materials
Aluminum is the default for lightweight, corrosion-resistant, easy-to-anodize boxes. Stainless suits hygienic and harsh-duty gear. CRS with powder coating is the cost play for indoor equipment. Our sheet metal line forms these in volume.
Sheet Metal vs. Machined Enclosures
Bent sheet metal is fast and cheap for rectangular boxes with thin walls. CNC bending holds repeatable angles; CNC punching adds tabs, louvers, and holes in one hit. Machined enclosures (from billet or plate) win when walls are thick, tolerances tight, or volumes low. Many designs mix both.
IP Ratings and Sealing
IP54 keeps out dust and splashes; IP65/66 add pressure-water resistance via gaskets, sealed seams, and waterproof connectors. Plan the gasket groove and lid interface during design, not after—our custom fabrication team reviews this in DFM.

Finishing and Marking
Powder coat gives a durable uniform color; anodize suits aluminum; silk screening puts your logo and part numbers on the surface. EMI shielding, grounding studs, and threaded inserts are added before final coat.
How to Spec an Enclosure
- Define environment and IP rating first.
- Send a 3D model plus a flat pattern with bend radii.
- Call out cutouts and inserts precisely.
- Choose finish and marking early.
FAQ
Sheet metal or machined?
Sheet metal for volume boxes; machined for low volume and tight fit.
What IP rating do I need?
Indoor: IP54; outdoor/washdown: IP65 or higher.
Can you add EMI shielding?
Yes—conductive coatings and gaskets are standard.

Why Choose Huaxiao for Custom Enclosures
